Abstract

This study, dealing with the emotion of shame, which has not been emphasized much in the Turkish political literature, aims to show that the emotion of shame fulfills a very important function in Plato’s political philosophy. For this purpose, it is tried to determine how Plato uses the concept of shame, especially in his own texts, and to analyze it conceptually. Plato assigns an important role to the sense of shame in the organization and maintenance of social life. Shame limits power by keeping the rulers as well as the ruled within ethical boundaries. Therefore, public politics manifests as a kind of shaming activity. Plato’s ideal society is a society of shame. Plato, who organizes society on the basis of reason, tries to massify the founding ethical and political values of society through the sense of shame when rational argument is insufficient. Plato sees justice and shame, the fundamental values that ensure public order, as divine endowments and grounds them through myth, placing them at the foundation of the social. It grounds the ethical and political in the theological.

Aidos, Mitos ve Polis Ya Da Hayâ, Din ve Devlet: Platon’da Utanmanın Politik İşlevi

Abstract

Türkçe siyasal literatürde pek üzerinde durulmayan utanma duygusunu ele alan bu çalışma utanma duygusunun Platon’un politik felsefesinde çok önemli bir işlev ifa ettiğini göstermeyi amaçlamaktadır. Bu amaçla Platon’un özellikle kendi metinlerin-de utanma kavramını nasıl kullandığını tespit edilmeye ve kavramsal olarak analiz edilmeye çalışılmıştır. Platon, toplumsal yaşamın tanziminde ve idamesinde utan-ma duygusuna önemli bir rol biçer. Toplumsal yaşamı mümkün kılan sınırların ihlâl etmesini engelleyen utanma duygusu, kamusal yaşamı düzenleyen en önemli araç-lardan biridir. Utanma, yönetilenler kadar yönetenleri de etik sınırlar içinde tutarak iktidarı sınırlandırır. Onun için kamusal politika bir çeşit utandırma faaliyeti olarak tezahür eder. Platon’un ideal toplumu bir hayâ toplumudur. Toplumu akıl temelinde organize eden Platon, rasyonel argümanın yetersiz kaldığı durumlarda toplumun ku-rucu etik ve politik değerlerini utanma duygusu üzerinden kitleselleştirmeye çalışır. Kamusal düzeni temin eden temel değerler olan adalet ve utanmayı ilahi bağışlar olarak görüp, mit aracılığıyla temellendirir; toplumsalın temeline yerleştirir. Etik ve politik olanı teolojik olana dayandırır.
