This article examines the divinatory significance of fungi in Ancient Mesopotamia and the functions they assumed within a ritual context. In Mesopotamian culture, phenomena observed in nature were interpreted as manifestations of divine will; within this framework, fungi that appeared spontaneously were also regarded as omens. In particular, the twelfth tablet of the šumma ālu omen series provides a detailed account of such observations. According to this tablet, the position, color and shape of fungi emerging on the northern, southern, eastern or western walls of a house, as well as on its doors, served as the basis for prognostications concerning long life, prosperity, death, illness or the loss of wealth. In order to neutralize these potential threats, apotropaic rituals aimed at dispelling misfortune were performed.
