Objective: In this retrospective study our aim was to compare the overall results of the Duromedics Edwards (DE) mechanical heart valves implanted at Hacettepe University (H.U) with the results of the other certers.
Methods: From 1988 to 1994 at H.U. Medical Center, a hundred and thirty Duromedics Edwards prosthetic valves were used for ninety-three patients. 21 patients were operated before April 21, 1988, rest of the patients were operated after July 24, 1991. Thirty - eight of the total patients had been operated for isolated mitral valve disease, fourteen patients for isolated aortic valve disease, four patients underwent operation for coronary artery by-pass with valve replacement, and the remaining thirty-seven patients had been operated for multiple valve diseases.
Results: The early and late mortality for isolated mitral valve replacements were 5% and 5% respectively, these were 7% and 0% for aortic valve replacements, 5,4% and 10% for multiple valve replacements respectively.
Conclusion: In this retrospective study we compared our results with the results of the other implanted prosthetic valves at various centers. Although our patient population was small in number, it was adequate to have an idea about Duromedics Edwards mechanical heart valves.
