A Sustainable Approach to Reconditioning of Inserts for Heavy-Duty Machining

Öz

This study presents a sustainable and structured approach for refurbishing heavy-duty turning inserts such as YNUX and LNUX, widely used in pipeline manufacturing, wind turbine production, and pressure vessel industries. The five-stage cycle includes collection, inspection, CNC regrinding, PVD/CVD recoating, and quality verification. This process extends tool life while significantly reducing material consumption, procurement costs, and waste. Literature indicates that refurbishment can lower tool costs by 30–50% and reduce CO₂ emissions through the recovery of critical materials like tungsten and cobalt. Large, symmetric inserts can typically withstand up to two regrinding cycles without performance loss and are compatible with scalable, localized refurbishment centers, supporting future experimental validation and industrial applications.
