REFLECTIONS OF TRADITIONAL TURKISH HANDICRAFTS ON CONTEMPORARY CERAMIC ART

Abstract

Original handcrafts have evolved throughout the history of Turkey. The region, religion, and life conditions have all affected these handcrafts over time. Some of these handcrafts were still performed such as Ebru art, calligraphy, tughra, glass, textile and kilim tapestry, wood and stone working, ceramic and pottery, metal working, while some of them were forgotten. The cultures of modern societies became unique with traditional arts. For that reason, traditional art elements give artists a more original status in contemporary world art. The variety of traditional Turkish art shows its effects also in contemporary Turkish ceramic art. Modern Turkish ceramic artists such as Zehra Çobanli, Jale Yılmabaşar, Vedat Kaçar, Muammer Çakı, Oya Uzuner, Mine Aktaş Poyraz, made original modern artworks based on traditional arts. In this paper author will present the effects of historical Turkish architecture and crafts on modern ceramic art
