The Role of Journalism Ethics and Digital Literacy in Combating Islamophobia

Year 2025, Volume: 8 Issue: 1, 63 - 84, 30.06.2025

Abstract

This study deeply analyzes the strategic partnership of journalistic ethics and digital literacy to support ethical content creation and foster critical evaluation to combat Islamophobic discourse effectively. Islamophobic discourses propagated through traditional news framing practices and digital platform algorithms, which often portray Muslims as "other" or "threat," pose a serious problem that reinforces social prejudices. A comprehensive literature review of academic publications, codes of ethics, policy documents, and reports from 2000-2024 was systematically evaluated from the perspective of Edward Said's Orientalism. The research highlights the potential of journalistic ethics to guide professional practices and the function of digital literacy to empower individuals by equipping them with critical thinking skills to counter disinformation. In particular, it was found that commercial pressures and algorithmic biases can increase the spread of ethical violations and discriminatory content. In conclusion, the study argues that the strategic synergy between journalistic ethics and digital literacy has a critical role in curbing Islamophobic hate speech and building a more informed and democratic media ecosystem by addressing problems in content production while reducing vulnerability in content consumption. Realizing this potential and implementing an integrated approach requires a shared responsibility from media organizations and individuals.

Gazetecilik Etiği ve Dijital Okuryazarlığın İslamofobiyle Mücadelede Rolü

Year 2025, Volume: 8 Issue: 1, 63 - 84, 30.06.2025
https://doi.org/10.47951/mediad.1675228

Abstract

Said’in Oryantalizm kuramı üzerinden değerlendirilmiştir. Araştırma, gazetecilik etiğinin (doğruluk, tarafsızlık, kamu yararı gibi temel ilkelerle) profesyonel pratiklere rehberlik etme potansiyelini vurgulamaktadır. Araştırmalar ticari baskılar ve algoritmik önyargıların etik ihlalleri ve ayrımcı içeriklerin yayılımını tetiklediğini ortaya koymaktadır. Sonuç olarak, çalışma gazetecilik etiği ile dijital okuryazarlık arasındaki stratejik sinerjinin, içerik üretimindeki sorunlara müdahale ederken aynı zamanda içerik tüketimindeki savunmasızlığı azaltarak, İslamofobik nefret söylemlerini engellemede kritik bir role sahip olduğunu ileri sürmektedir. Bu potansiyelin hayata geçirilmesi için medya kuruluşlarının etik standartları güçlendirmesi, dijital okuryazarlık programlarının yaygınlaştırılması ve bireylerin bilinçlendirilmesine yönelik somut adımların atılması zorunludur.
