Truth as a Hollow: The Ontology of Void in Kerr, Burning Days and Black Night

Abstract

This article argues that in recent Turkish cinema truth does not manifest itself through direct representation, but rather emerges as a form of absence, void, and hollowing. Through close readings of Tayfun Pirselimoğlu’s Kerr (2021), Emin Alper’s Burning Days (2022), and Özcan Alper’s Black Night (2022), the study suggests that truth becomes visible not on the surface of what is shown, but within what is repressed, silenced, and excluded from representation. The article proposes that these cinematic voids are not merely aesthetic strategies, but are ontologically bound to trauma, collective guilt, and the impossibility of confrontation. Narrative omissions, spatial and uncertainty experienced by the characters are interpreted as expressions of a hollowed collective memory. In this sense, the void is treated not as a simple lack, but as a mode of being through which truth is indirectly signified. The study ultimately claims that contemporary Turkish cinema —particularly films set in the provincial landscape— renders regimes of violence and repression visible not by depicting them explicitly, but by circling persistently around the silence that contains them.

Oyuk Olarak Hakikat: Kerr, Kurak Günler ve Karanlık Gece’de Boşluğun Ontolojisi

Abstract

Bu çalışma, son dönem Türk sinemasında hakikatin doğrudan temsilinden ziyade bir eksilme, boşluk ve oyuklaşma biçiminde ortaya çıktığı iddiasını merkezine almaktadır. Tayfun Pirselimoğlu’nun Kerr (2021), Emin Alper’in Kurak Günler (2022) ve Özcan Alper’in Karanlık Gece (2022) filmleri üzerinden yapılan çözümlemede, hakikatin görünür olanın yüzeyinde değil, bastırılan, söylenmeyen ve temsil dışına itilen alanlarda belirginleştiği savunulur. Makale, bu filmlerdeki boşlukların yalnızca estetik bir tercih değil, aynı zamanda travma, suç ve yüzleşememe durumlarının ontolojik bir sonucu olduğunu ileri sürer. Anlatıdaki eksiltmeler, mekânsal ve karakterlerin deneyimlediği belirsizlikler, kolektif hafızanın oyuk yapısıyla ilişkilendirilir. Böylece boşluk, bir yokluk hâli değil; hakikatin dolaylı biçimde işaretlendiği bir varlık tarzı olarak ele alınır. Çalışma, Türkiye’de özellikle taşra uzamında üretilen sinemanın, toplumsal şiddet ve bastırma rejimlerini görünmezleştirerek değil, tam tersine görünmeyen etrafında örülen sessizliklerle görünür kıldığını ortaya koymayı amaçlamaktadır.
