Abstract

Typologically, languages can be classified as Verb-framed languages and Satellite-framed languages according to the core feature in the verb (Talmy, 1985, 1991). In Satellite-framed languages (e.g. English), manner of motion is typically encoded in the verb while the path of motion is expressed by prepositional phrases. In Verb-framed languages (e.g. Turkish), the verb usually encodes the path of motion while the manner of motion is encoded in manner adverbials. Satellite-framed languages do have verbs which encode path information and Verb-framed languages have verbs encoding manner of motion. However, the two language groups prefer different lexicalization of motion events. This paper describes that the concept of manner in motion verbs can be dealt with from semantically different perspectives. Spatial, motor pattern, rate, attitude, instrument and intentionality are the features of manner. The aim of this paper is to determine the linguistic units which describe manner in Turkish, to discuss the manner and path in motion verbs and to determine the conceptual structures of motion verbs.
