Examination of beliefs about thirdhand smoke in university students: A descriptive study

Abstract

Aim: This study is aimed to examine the relationship between third-hand smoke awareness and age, number, and year of smoking in university students and to compare third-hand smoke awareness in terms of various variables. Method: Associate and undergraduate students aged 18-25 were included in the study. All participants' age, gender, program (education level), smoking status, place of residence, cohabitants, smoking status, and anti-smoking association membership were questioned. The Beliefs about Thirdhand Smoke Scale assessed participants' beliefs about thirdhand smoke. The association of age, number of cigarettes per day, and year of smoking with beliefs about thirdhand smoke was assessed by Spearman correlation analysis. Independent paired and multiple group comparisons were evaluated with Mann-Whitney U test and Kruskal-Wallis test, respectively. Results: The study was completed with a total of 462 (362 female, 100 male) participants. The mean Beliefs about Thirdhand Smoke Scale score of the participants was 32.76±10.57. Beliefs about thirdhand smoke had a negative correlation with number of cigarettes (p=0.024) and year (p=0.013). Beliefs about thirdhand smoke were higher among women (p=0.014), associate degree students (p=0.023), non-smokers (p=0.009), and members of an anti-smoking association (p=0.027). Conclusion: In order to increase beliefs about thirdhand smoke among university students, intervening variables such as education level, smoking status, and association membership should be focused on.

Üniversite Öğrencilerinde Üçüncü El Sigara Dumanı Farkındalığına Katkıda Bulunan Faktörlerin İncelenmesi: tanımlayıcı bir çalışma

Abstract

Amaç: Bu çalışmanın amacı, üniversite öğrencilerinde üçüncü el sigara dumanı (THS) farkındalığına katkıda bulunan faktörlerin incelenmesidir. Yöntem: Çalışmaya 18-25 yaş aralığında ön lisans ve lisans öğrencileri dahil edildi. Tüm katılımcıların yaş, cinsiyet, program (eğitim düzeyi), sigara içme durumu, kalınan yer, birlikte kalınan kişiler, birlikte kalınan kişilerin sigara içme durumu ve sigara karşıtı dernek üyeliği sorgulandı. Katılımcıların THS farkındalığı, Üçüncü El Sigara Dumanı Hakkında Farkındalık Ölçeği (BATHS) ile değerlendirildi. İki aşamalı bir analiz gerçekleştirildi. Birinci aşamada; bağımsız değişkenlerin ikinci analize seçilmesi için tek değişkenli analiz yapıldı. İkinci aşamada THS farkındalığına katkıda bulunan faktörlerin belirlenmesi için çoklu doğrusal regresyon analizi gerçekleştirildi. Bulgular: Toplam 462 (362 kadın, 100 erkek) katılımcı ile çalışma tamamlandı. Katılımcıların BATHS skoru ortalaması 32.76±10.57’dir. THS farkındalığına sigara karşıtı dernek üyeliği, program ve cinsiyet değişkenleri anlamlı düzeyde katkıda bulunmaktadır (F= 5.189; p<0.001). Bu model, THS farkındalığındaki toplam varyansın %6.2'sini açıklayabilir (düzeltilmiş R2 = 0.062). Sonuç: Sonuç olarak, bu çalışma üniversite öğrencilerinin THS farkındalığı ve bunları etkileyebilecek faktörlerle ilgili yeni bilgiler sunmaktadır. THS farkındalığını artırmak için THS’nin tanımı ve sağlık açısından olumsuz etkilerini vurgulayan eğitim programları düzenlenmeli, reklam ve kampanyalar oluşturulmalı ve bireylerin sigara karşıtı dernek vb. üyeliği teşvik edilmelidir.
