Mental images of nursing students regarding first clinical practice: a metaphor study

Abstract

Objective: The study aimed to reveal and explain nursing students’ mental images about their first clinical experience with metaphors. Method: The phenomenological study based on the metaphor analysis technique was conducted with 240 nursing students experiencing first clinical practice between May-June 2022. The data were collected with “Student Information Form” and “Metaphor Perception for the First Clinical Experience Form” as online. Results: In this study, 117 metaphors related to students’ first clinical practice experiences were gathered under 8 categories, namely living, feeling, new experience, object, place, food and drink, activity, and surreal being. The metaphors used by the highest number of students were “toddler”, “just starting school”, “fish out of water”. Conclusion: Students’ metaphors about their first clinical experience revealed both positive and negative emotions, thoughts and experiences.. The students tried to cope with their feelings and thoughts during the first clinical practice process.

Hemşirelik öğrencilerinin ilk klinik uygulamaya ilişkin zihinsel imgeleri: Metaforik bir çalışma

Abstract

Amaç: Bu çalışmanın amacı hemşirelik öğrencilerinin ilk klinik uygulamaya ilişkin zihinsel imgelerini metaforlar aracılığı ile ortaya çıkarmak ve açıklamaktır. Yöntem: Metafor analiz tekniğine dayalı betimleyici fenomenolojik türdeki bu çalışma Türkiye’ de, bir devlet üniversitenin hemşirelik bölümünde eğitimine devam eden, klinik uygulamayı ilk kez deneyimleyen, 240 hemşirelik öğrencisi ile Mayıs-Haziran 2022 tarihleri arasında yürütüldü. Çalışmanın verileri “Öğrenci Bilgi Formu” ve “İlk Klinik Deneyim ile İlişkili Metafor Algısı Formu” ile online olarak toplandı. Bulgular: Bu çalışmada öğrencilerin ilk klinik uygulama deneyimlerine ilişkin elde edilen 117 metafor, 8 kategori altında toplandı. Metafor kategorileri; canlı, his, yeni deneyim, obje, yer, yiyecek ve içecek, aktivite ve gerçeküstü varlıklar idi. En fazla sayıda belirlenen metaforlar “yürümeyi yeni öğrenen çocuk”, “okula yeni başlamak”, “sudan çıkmış balık” idi. Sonuç: Öğrencilerin ilk klinik deneyimlerine ilişkin metaforlarının hem pozitif hem de negatif duygu, düşünce ve yaşantılarını açığa çıkardığı görüldü. Aynı zamanda ilk klinik uygulama sürecinde bu duygu ve düşüncelerle baş etmeye çalıştıkları sonucuna varıldı.
