Abstract Morphological and Anatomical Studies On Olive Leaves Being Sold In Herbalists In Various Cities Objective: The aims of this study are to investigate the morphological and anatomical characters of the olive leaf samples that are sold by herbalists in the several cities of Turkey and also to compare their characteristics with standard samples and data given in a Pharmacopoeia to determine suitability of the samples (specifically to European Pharmacopoeia of 2008). Method: In this study, 18 samples were purchased from 3 different herbalists of various cities (İstanbul, Ankara, Gaziantep, Mersin, Sivas and Van) and 1 reference sample was collected from the nature to be used for the analysis of olive leaves sold in herbalists. Morphological structure of natural olive samples and anatomical properties of the transverse and surface sections of the olive leaves were examined and described. Furthermore, characteristic elements of the olive leaf powder and the samples of purchased from herbalists were determined. Subsequently, their microphotographs were taken. Results: According to results of the morphological and anatomical characteristics of the samples purchased from the herbalists, it has been assumed that the samples were of O. europaea L. However; it has been realized that the morphological characteristics of the samples did not meet the officinal drug standards in European Pharmacopoeia. Conclusion: It was indicated that the olive leaves being sold in herbalists do not meet the requirements for the scientific definition of a drug. Furthermore, some samples of olive leaves have been sold uncovered and unpackaged. They contained organic and inorganic materials. Thus, they do not possess suitable properties to public health.
