Abstract West Nile Virus and Infection West Nile virus is a neurotropic arthropod-borne flavivirus. Enzootic transmission of West Nile virus occurs between mosquitoes and birds, but humans and horses are regarded as incidental dead-end hosts while sensitive to West Nile virus-induced meningoencephalitis. Mosquitoes of the Culex genus are the main vectors of West Nile virus. Although most human infections are asemptomatic, about 20% of infected people have fever, rash, arthralgia, and myalgia, 1% of them may develop severe disease, including meningoencephalitis, encephalitis, and flaccid paralysis. West Nile virus infection is a serious threat to public health, especially to the immunocompromised and elderly people in terms of further development to more severe diseases. This review summarises the main features of West Nile virus infection.
