Abstract

Abstract Results of Cataract Surgeries Performed by Residents Aim: It is planned to evaluate the visual outcomes and complication rates of cataract surgeries performed by residents under the supervision of specialist ophthalmologists. Method: Phacoemulsification surgeries were performed by six residents, who were in their fourth year of education, under the supervision of a specialist ophthalmologist at Mersin University, Faculty of Medicine, Department of Ophthalmology. Fourty eyes of fourty patients were included in the study. Under local anesthesia, phacoemulsification surgeries with clear corneal incisions were performed. Visual outcomes and complications developed during and after surgeries were evaluated. Results: Mean age of the patients were 65.43±9.24 years (range: 46-90 years). They were followed up for meanly 4.9 months (range: 1-48 months). Visual acuities according to Snellen chart were determined both pre- and post-operatively as 0.13±0.10 and 0.72±0.23 respectively. Twenty-two patients (55%) had no complications whereas 18 (45%) patients developed at least one complication. Conclusion: Both the residents and the specialists face various difficulties during the training period for phacoemulsification surgeries. The related surgical practices on animal eyes prior to the training in operation room help to improve manual skills. It seems that the success rates can be increased by performing the surgeries under the supervision of experienced specialists.
