Abstract Assesment of Knowledge Level of Drug Users about Hepatitis B and C in Mersin City Aim: The drug addicts all over the world constitute the risk group in which hepatitis B, hepatitis C, and other viral infections are usually seen. In this study, it was aimed o determine of the knowledge level of drug addicts about hepatitis B and C in Mersin City. Method: This study was conducted on a total of 151 volunteers who were the drug users arrested by the Narcotic Police Department of Mersin. The data, including socio-demographic characteristics, information about the drug usage and the knowledge about HIV/AIDS of drug users were obtained using a questionnaire form. Results: In this study, it was determined that majority of the drug addicts were men in the age range of 14-24 years, whom 43% were multiple sex partners. Most of them have used marihuana. It was determined that the drug users know blood transfusion and sexual contact as transmission routes for hepatitis B and C at most whereas their knowledge on other routes of transmission, therapy and protection against these diseases is not sufficient. The majority of these people have acquired knowledge about hepatitis B and C from press. Conclusion: The outcomes of this study reveal the need of the drug users in Mersin for more knowledge of hepatitis B and C.
Türkçe Özet: Amaç: Tüm dünyada uyuşturucu madde bağımlıları, hepatit B ve hepatit C virüs infeksiyonlarının en sık görüldüğü risk grubunu oluşturmaktadırlar. Bu çalışmada Mersin ilinde uyuşturucu madde kullananların hepatit B ve hepatit C hakkındaki bilgi düzeylerinin belirlenmesi amaçlanmıştır. Yöntem: Çalışma Mersin Emniyet Müdürlüğü, Kaçakçılık ve Organize Suçlarla Mücadele Şube Müdürlüğü Narkotik Büro\'suna uyuşturucu madde kullanımı nedeniyle tutuklu olarak getirilen kişiler ile dışarıda bu maddeleri serbest olarak kullanan 151 kişi üzerinde yapılmıştır. Araştırmaya katılan kişilerin sosyo-demografik ve madde kullanım bilgileri ile hepatit B ve hepatit C hakkındaki bilgileri anket formu uygulanarak elde edilmiştir. Bulgular: Çalışmada uyuşturucu madde kullananların çoğunlukla 14–24 yaş aralığında ve erkeklerden oluştuğu, %43\'ünün eş dışında cinsel teması olduğu ve en çok esrar kullandıkları saptanmıştır. Uyuşturucu madde kullananların hepatit B ve hepatit C\'nin bulaş yollarından en fazla kan ve cinsel yolu bildikleri, diğer bulaş yolları ile bu hastalıkların tedavi ve korunması ile ilgili bilgilerinin yetersiz olduğu saptanmış ve bu kişilerin bilgi edinmede en çok basını kullandıkları belirlenmiştir. Sonuç: Uyuşturucu madde kullananların hepatit B ve hepatit C konusunda bilgi gereksinimleri olduğu görülmüştür.

MEU Journal of Health Sciences Assoc was began to the publishing process in 2008 under the supervision of Assoc. Prof. Gönül Aslan, Editor-in-Chief, and affiliated to Mersin University Institute of Health Sciences. In March 2015, Prof. Dr. Caferi Tayyar Şaşmaz undertook the Editor-in Chief position and since then he has been in charge.
Publishing in three issues per year (April - August - December), it is a multisectoral refereed scientific journal. In addition to research articles, scientific articles such as reviews, case reports and letters to the editor are published in the journal. Our journal, which has been published via e-mail since its inception, has been published both online and in print. Following the Participation Agreement signed with TÜBİTAK-ULAKBİM Dergi Park in April 2015, it has started to accept and evaluate online publications.
