Abstract Relationship Between Acute Myocardial Infarction and Malondialdehyde, Total Antioxidant Capacity and Nitric Oxide Levels Aim: Acute myocardial infarction, one of the most important causes of morbidity and mortality in the world, occurs as a result of occlusion of the vessels nourishing the hearth tissue. The main cause of 90% of the cases is usually atherosclerosis. The relationship between atherosclerosis and the decrease in antioxidant enzyme activity and hence, oxidative stress were determined by scientific studies. Malondialdehyde forms as a seconder product, being the indicator of lipid peroxidation. Therefore, it was aimed to investigate the serum total antioxidant capacity, the nitric oxide and levels along with the relation between oxidative stress parameters and the acute myocardial infarction in this study. Method: 24 patients (6 females, 18 males) admitted with chest pain to Mersin University Hospital, Department of Cardiology were included to the study. They were all diagnosed with myocardial infarction. Also, 21 healthy volunteers (10 females, 11 males) were included, making the total number of subjects involved in this study 45. Serum nitric oxide, serum total antioxidant capacity and serum malondialdehyde levels of all individuals were measured. Results: No statistically signifcant difference was found between healthy volunteers and the patients with acute myocardial infarction regarding malondialdehyde (p=0.49) and total antioxidant capacity (p=0.50) levels. Serum nitric oxide levels in patients significantly increased in comparison with the control group (p=0.02). Conclusion: In our study, underlying cause of high serum nitric oxide levels in the patients with acute myocardial infarction might be the formation of inflammation as a defense mechanism against oxidative stress.
