Abstract

Analysis of Path Dependency in Music History Writing: Methodology and Application Example

Abstract

This study models the historiographical development of 10th-century Islamic music through a path-dependence lens, operationalized with Structural Equation Modeling (SEM) via AMOS. Drawing on primary sources—treatises, compilations, and literary manuscripts—the research codes theoretical, practical, and documentary domains associated with al-Fārābī, Salama, and Abū’l-Faraj al6Iṣfahānī. Indicators are organized into a Court Index and a Religious Practice Index to capture socio-political and ritual contexts. Using Path Analysis with Maximum Likelihood, the model tests direct and mediated influences of the three figures on a latent construct, “Music Historiography.” Fit statistics indicate a robust specification (χ²/df, RMSEA, CFI, TLI, SRMR within accepted thresholds). Results show al- Fārābī exerting the strongest direct effect, Salama mediating and systematizing Farabian constructs, and Abū’l6Faraj linking theory to lived practice through documentary synthesis. The findings demonstrate that continuity in Islamic music historiography emerges from epistemic interdependence rather than isolated contributions. Methodologi6 cally, the study offers a replicable empirical–conceptual framework that integrates qualitative interpretation with quantitative validation, reframing music historiography as a structured, evolving narrative shaped by institutional, cultural, and spiritual dynamics.
