Determining the effect of regional transportation investments on urban growth using the SLEUTH model: the case of Kırıkkale

Abstract

With the growth of cities, changes occur in land use patterns. The detection of land-use changes and the projection of future trends are employed to control unplanned urbanization. For this reason, studies are conducted to determine the potential transformations of cities through the use of simulation models. On the other hand, transportation network investments are among the factors affecting urban development, the direction of growth, and land-use changes. The study aimed to determine how regional transportation investments would affect the urban growth model of Kırıkkale Province. In this study, the SLEUTH model, which is frequently used in urban growth and simulation modeling, was employed. An urban model for the year 2048 was developed for Kırıkkale Province, and potential changes in land use were identified. According to the findings, urban growth in Kırıkkale Province has also affected important land-use classes, including agricultural areas. Based on the modeling results, it was determined that the settlement area covered 6,051.37 ha, corresponding to 15.13% of the total area in 2018, whereas it was modeled to cover 7,433.12 ha, corresponding to 18.58% of the total area, by 2048. This spatial expansion revealed that agricultural land had been converted to settlement areas, and further losses of cultivated land were projected. The study results indicate that approximately 936.04 hectares of agricultural land may have urbanization potential by 2048. It is considered that the findings of this study will provide a valuable resource for planners and offer a scientific perspective for decision-making processes in urban policy.
