Growth and Mortality Assessments of European pilchard Sardina pilchardus (Walbaum, 1792) in the Southern Aegean Sea
Abstract
This study evaluated the length-weight relationship, age structure, growth parameters, mortality rates, and exploitation status of the European pilchard, Sardina pilchardus, from the Didim coast of the southern Aegean Sea. A total of 402 individuals were examined, comprising 252 females (62.69%) and 150 males (37.31%). Total length ranged from 8.00 to 16.20 cm in females and from 8.50 to 15.40 cm in males. Length-weight relationships indicated negative allometric growth in females (b = 2.735), males (b = 2.724), and all individuals (b = 2.739). Sagittal otolith readings revealed age groups 0-IV, with age group II dominating the pooled sample. The von Bertalanffy growth parameters were estimated as L∞ = 22.60 cm, k = 0.15 yr-1, and t0 = -2.01 yr for females; L∞ = 20.62 cm, k = 0.17 yr-1, and t0 = -3.15 yr for males; and L∞ = 20.07 cm, k = 0.20 yr-1, and t0 = -2.84 yr for all individuals. Total, natural, and fishing mortality rates were Z = 0.32 yr-1, M = 0.31 yr-1, and F = 0.01 yr-1, respectively, with an exploitation rate of E = 0.04. These values indicate a low contribution of fishing mortality to total mortality during the study period. This study provides the first assessment of the growth and mortality parameters for S. pilchardus along the Didim coast and a regional reference for future population and exploitation assessments in the southern Aegean Sea.
