The Effects of Sexual Orientation- Based Discrimination in the Workplace against White Collar Lesbians and Gays

Abstract

This article investigates the effects of sexualorientation-based workplace discrimination inTurkey. The experiences of white-collar lesbiansand gays on the effects of encountered and potential discrimination they have faced in the workplace are discussed. In this article, the existing theoretical literature on the effects of sexual orientation-based discrimination are evaluated, their relevance for Turkey, which is a developing country,where the traditional and cultural beliefs andnorms are still prevalent is analyzed. The presenceof sexual orientation-based discrimination isrevealed through the interviews held with whitecollar lesbians and gays

Abstract

Bu makale, Türkiye’de işyerinde yaşanan cinsel yönelim ayrımcılığının etkilerini araştırmaktadır. Makalede, beyaz yakalı işlerde çalışan lezbiyen ve gey bireylerin işyerinde karşılaşılan ve potansiyel ayrımcılığın etkilerine dair deneyimlerine odaklanılmaktadır. Bu çalışmada, cinsel yönelime dayalı ayrımcılığın etkileri konusunda var olan teorik çalışmalar değerlendirilip geçerlilikleri, gelişmekte olan ve geleneklerin hâkim olduğu bir ülke olan Türkiye için analiz edilmekte ve iş yerinde cinsel yönelim ayrımcılığının varlığı beyaz yakalı lezbiyen ve geyler ile yapılan görüşmeler üzerinden ortaya konulmaktadır.Anahtar Sözcükler: Cinsel yönelim ayrımcılığı, cinsel yönelim ayrımcılığının etkileri, azınlık stresi, LGBT, beyaz yakalıEFFECTS OF SEXUAL ORIENTATION BASED DISCRIMINATION AGAINST WHITE COLLAR LESBIANS and GAYS: ANKARA CASEThis article searches the effects of sexual orientation based workplace discrimination in Turkey. The effects of encountered and potential discrimination experiences that white collar lesbians and gays experience at workplace are discussed. In this article, I analyze the existing theoretical literature on effects of sexual orientation discrimination and evaluate their relevance in a developing country, such as Turkey, where traditional and cultural beliefs and norms are still prevalent.
