Reflecting the Concept of the Sublime from Burke to Kant in Werner Herzog's films: Aguirre, The Wrath of God

Abstract

In his writings, Gilles Deleuze refers to Werner Herzog as the most metaphysical of living directors. Herzog is one of the few directors in the history of cinema who can be considered to have made a signifcant and lasting impact. Despite the fact that his flms exhibit a distinctive aesthetic structure that strives to reconcile the real and the cinematic, his cinematic language serves as a source of inspiration for numerous directors who have followed in his footsteps. Philosophical enquiry constitutes a primary focus of his cinematic output. In his flm Aguirre, the Wrath of God (1972), Herzog engages in a philosophical inquiry into the concept of the sublime, underscoring the dichotomy between the natural and the human realms. The flm can be seen to embody the mathematical and dynamic sublime in the Kantian sense, but it also foregrounds the sublime in the Burkean sense, which includes an eerie aesthetic experience. This study will examine Herzog’s philosophical inquiries into the concept of the sublime in the context of the discussions by Edmund Burke and Immanuel Kant on the same topic in the flm Aguirre, the Wrath of God. This study will evaluate the way Herzog, one of the most signifcant directors of young German cinema, handles the concept of the sublime in his flms, employing his distinctive cinematic language. It will do so by analysing the philosophical inferences made by Kant and Burke about the concept of the sublime. In addition, it will examine the meaning attributed to the concept by Kant and Burke, as well as the extent to which it is present in Herzog’s cinematic work.

Burke’ten Kant’a Yüce Kavramının Werner Herzog Sinemasındaki Yansıması: Aguirre, Tanrının Gazabı Filmi*

Abstract

Gilles Deleuze, Werner Herzog için yaşayan yönetmenler arasındaki en metafizik olanı der. Herzog sinema tarihinde eşine az rastlanan yönetmenlerin başında gelir. Filmleri yaşamla sinema arasında ortalık arayan belirli bir estetik yapı içermekle birlikte sinema dili kendisinden sonra gelecek birçok yönetmene ilham kaynağı oluşturur. Sinemasında felsefi soruşturmalar önceliklidir. 1972 yılında yönettiği Aguirre, Tanrı’nın Gazabı filmi yönetmenin felsefi anlamda yüce kavramına dair sorgulamalarını içerirken doğa ile insan karşıtlığına vurgu yapar. Film, Kantçı anlamda matematiksel ve dinamik yüceyi somutlaştırırken Burke’çü anlamda ürkütücü bir estetik deneyimi içeren yüceliği ön plana çıkarır. Çalışmada Aguirre, Tanrı’nın Gazabı filmi özelinde Herzog’un yüce kavramına dair felsefi sorgulamaları Edmund Burke ve Immanuel Kant’ın yüce kavramına dair tartışmaları bağlamında ele alınacaktır. Genç Alman sinemasının önemli yönetmenlerinden Herzog’un yüce kavramını kendine has sinema diliyle filmlerinde işleme biçimi, Burke ve Kant’ın kavrama dair felsefi çıkarımlarından yola çıkılarak değerlendirilecektir. Kant’ın ve Burke’ün yüce kavramına yüklemiş olduğu anlamla, kavramın Herzog sinemasındaki örtüşmeleri ayrıntılarıyla değerlendirilecektir.
