A Study On Absorbed Radiation Dose By Accumulated Lime On The Taps In Gaziantep

Abstract

Limescale (CaCO3) accumulation occurs on the taps due to the high mineral content (hardness) of the municipal water supply. The ability of limescale to absorb ionizing radiation makes it a potential candidate for radiation dosimetry. This study aimed to investigate the radiation dosimetry behaviours of limescale samples collected from various neighborhoods in Gaziantep, Turkey, and compare the naturally absorbed radiation doses among the different collection site. The lime deposits accumulated on the tap exhibit thermoluminescence properties and, due to their radiation absorption capacity, can be considered a good candidate for radiation dosimeters. When the doses naturally absorbed from the formation of the samples are compared, the highest values for TL intensity and area under the curve are obtained from the sample taken from Güvenevler neighborhood.
