Investigation of the Relationship Between Self-Efficacy Level and Postpartum Depression in Adolescent Mothers

Abstract

The aim of the study was to examine the relationship between the self-efficacy levels of adolescent mothers and their postpartum depression levels. The study is cross-sectional. The universe of the study consisted of adolescent mothers who were hospitalized in the postpartum ward of a state hospital in southeastern Turkey between July and December 2021. 307 mothers between the ages of 15-19 who agreed to participate in the study participated in the study. The Socio-Demographic Characteristics Identification Form, General Self-Efficacy Scale, and Edinburgh Postpartum Depression Scale were used to collect data. The data obtained in the study was analyzed using the SPSS (Statistical Package for Social Sciences) for Windows 22.0 program. The mean score of the mothers' General Self-Efficacy Scale was 41.10±6.73, and the mean score of the Edinburgh Postpartum Depression Scale was 13.72±3.32. When the descriptive and obstetric characteristics of the mothers and the scale score averages were compared, it was determined that there was a statistically significant difference between the mothers' educational status, pregnancy being planned, having health problems during pregnancy, being followed up during pregnancy and the general self-efficacy scale; and between having health problems during pregnancy and the Edinburgh postpartum depression scale. As a result; it was determined that the self-efficacy levels of adolescent mothers were low, they were in the risk group in terms of depression, and there was a weak relationship between their general self-efficacy levels and postpartum depression.

Adölesan Annelerde Öz-Yeterlilik Düzeyi ile Postpartum Depresyon Arasındaki İlişkinin İncelenmesi

Abstract

Araştırmada adölesan annelerin öz-yeterlilik düzeyleri ile postpartum depresyon düzeyleri arasındaki ilişkinin incelenmesi amaçlanmıştır. Araştırma kesitsel türdedir. Araştırmanın evrenini Temmuz–Aralık 2021 tarihleri arasında Türkiye’nin güneydoğusunda bir devlet hastanesinin postpartum servisinde yatan adölesan anneler oluşturmuştur. Araştırmaya 15-19 yaş aralığında olan ve çalışmaya katılmayı kabul eden 307 anne katılmıştır. Verilerin toplanmasında, Sosyo-Demografik Özellikler Tanıtım Formu, Genel Öz-Yeterlilik Ölçeği, Edinburgh Postpartum Depresyon Ölçeği kullanılmıştır. Araştırmada elde edilen veriler SPSS (Statistical Package for Social Sciences) for Windows 22,0 programı kullanılarak analiz edilmiştir. Annelerin Genel Öz Yeterlilik Ölçeği puan ortalamaları 41,10±6,73, Edinburg Postpartum Depresyon Ölçeği puan ortalamaları 13,72±3,32 olarak saptanmıştır. Annelerin tanımlayıcı ve obstetrik özellikleri ile ölçek puan ortalamaları karşılaştırıldığında annelerin eğitim durumu, gebeliğin planlı olma durumu, gebelikte sağlık problemi yaşama durumu, gebeliğinde takip edilme durumu ile genel öz yeterlilik ölçeği arasında; gebelikte sağlık problemi yaşama durumu ile Edinburg postpartum depresyon ölçeği arasında istatistiksel açıdan anlamlı fark olduğu tespit edilmiştir Sonuç olarak; adölesan annelerin öz-yeterlilik düzeylerinin az olduğu, depresyon açısından riskli grupta oldukları, genel öz-yeterlilik düzeyleri ile postpartum depresyon arasında zayıf ilişki olduğu belirlenmiştir.
