Experimental and numerical investigation of flow through culverts in box and circular shapes

Abstract

In this study, experimental and numerical investigation of water surface profiles around culverts in box and circular shapes has been carried out under six different flow conditions, which are examined in a comprehensive hydraulic design of culverts. The experimental study has been conducted in a flume with dimensions of 10x0.309x0.45m in Department of Civil Engineering Hydraulics Laboratory at Niğde Ömer Halisdemir University. The numerical values representing water surface variations have been obtained not only the measurement but also using an image processing technique. Hence, it allows to study the applicability of the image processing technique to the similar flow conditions. Numerical modeling has been performed by using HEC-RAS, which is a widely used model for 1D free surface flow simulations. In addition, a direct step method has been applied in areas where the flow is gradually varied. Overall results obtained from the numerical and the experimental studies have been compared. Generally speaking, a good agreement has been observed between the numerical and the experimental results in terms of the shapes of water surface profiles. Comparing with the measurements, HEC-RAS numerical model mostly produces a higher water surface profiles upstream of the culverts and do not capture well downstream of the culverts where there are abrupt changes in the water surface. The results indicate that the water depth values obtained from image processing technique agrees well with the experimental data in general. It has also been seen that the most important advantages of the image processing techniques is that it allows to have flow data without disturbing flows and also in the areas where the physical measurement is impossible or too difficult. As it is known, the accuracy of the data depends on the quality of the images and the digitalization algorithm. Hence, the results are found to be unsatisfactory in cases where the flow is more complex due to the intense turbulence behavior and the quality of the obtained images are not good enough.

Kutu ve dairesel kesitli menfez akımlarının deneysel ve sayısal olarak incelenmesi

Abstract

Bu çalışmada menfezlerin detaylı hidrolik tasarım hesaplarında dikkate alınan altı farklı akım durumunda kutu ve dairesel enkesitli menfezler etrafında oluşan su yüzü profilleri deneysel ve sayısal olarak incelenmiştir. Deneysel çalışmalar, Niğde Ömer Halisdemir Üniversitesi İnşaat Mühendisliği Bölümü Hidrolik Laboratuvarında bulunan ve boyutları 10x0.309x0.45m olan deneysel kanal kullanılarak yapılmıştır. Deneysel çalışmalarda su yüzü profillerine ait sayısal değerler yapılan ölçümlerin yanı sıra görüntü işleme tekniği kullanarak da elde olunmuştur. Böylece, çalışmada görüntü işleme tekniğinin burada tarif olunan akım koşullarında uygulanabilirliği de araştırılmıştır. Sayısal çalışmalar, açık kanal akımlarının bir boyutlu model çalışmalarında yaygın olarak kullanılan HEC-RAS yardımıyla yapılmıştır. Tedrici değişken akım bölgelerinde, su yüzü profilleri ayrıca direkt adım metodu ile de hesaplanmıştır. Sayısal model sonuçları, direkt adım metodu sonuçları, deneysel ölçüm ve görüntü işleme sonuçları karşılaştırılmıştır. Genel olarak sayısal ve deneysel sonuçlara dayalı su yüzü profillerinin şekilsel olarak oldukça benzer olduğu görülmüştür. Ölçüm sonuçları ile karşılaştırıldığında, HEC-RAS sayısal modelinin memba bölgelerinde genelde yüksek değerler verdiği, mansap bölgesinde su yüzü değişimlerinin ani olduğu yerlerde ise değişimleri yakalayamadığı görülmüştür. Görüntü işleme tekniğinin genel olarak ölçüm sonuçlarına benzerliği dikkat çekerken, akıma müdahale olmaksızın ve fiziksel ölçüm yapılamayan yerlerde de sonuçlar alınabilmesinin büyük bir avantaj olduğu görülmüştür. Bilindiği üzere, tekniğin sonuçlarının görüntü kalitesine ve görüntülerin sayısallaştırılmasında kullanılan algoritmaya bağlı olmasından ötürü, türbülans özelliğinin fazla olduğu kompleks akım bölgelerinde istenilen düzeyde iyi sonuçlar elde edilememiştir.
