The intellectual progress of the transition from “state” to “society” in Durkheim's sociology

Abstract

Historical sociology as a method can be used to understand the origins and development of social movements. Moreover, this method analyzes the transformation of cultural norms and values over time by studying how different political systems and regimes were formed and how they changed in the historical process. Based on these basic theses, the method of historical sociology can be effectively used to analyze the process leading to the idea of “society” in classical sociology. This article is written to analyze the intellectual process that the idea of “society” conceptually went through in Western thought with a special focus on Durkheim. Thinking modern politics from the social sphere is an important starting point and content of Durkheim's sociological thought. Therefore, it is among the aims of this article to revisit Durkheim's early writings and try to trace how Durkheim made the transition from the political to the social sphere and how he constructed the social theory of modern politics. The central thesis of this article argues that Durkheim's two types of social solidarity are in part a continuation of the conceptual traditions of universitas and societas that have been used to conceptualize the modern state since the thirteenth century. Durkheim transformed these concepts in terms of their signification, while at the same time constructing a doctrine of the evolutionary history and reality of political society. Ultimately, Durkheim's theory of occupational groups can only be properly understood in the context of this transformational doctrine.

Durkheim sosyolojisinde “devlet” kavramından “toplum” kavramına geçişin düşünsel serüveni

Abstract

Tarihsel sosyoloji bir yöntem olarak sosyal hareketlerin kökenlerini ve gelişimlerini anlamak için kullanılabilir. Dahası bu yöntem farklı siyasi sistemlerin ve rejimlerin nasıl oluştuğu ve tarihsel süreçte nasıl değiştiği üzerinde çalışarak kültürel normların ve değerlerin zaman içindeki dönüşümünü analiz eder. Bu temel tezlerden hareketle klasik sosyolojide “toplum” fikrine ulaştıran süreci analiz etmek için tarihsel sosyoloji yöntemi etkin biçimde kullanılabilir. Bu makale “toplum” fikrinin kavramsal olarak Batı düşüncesinde geçirdiği düşünsel süreci Durkheim özelinde ele almak için kaleme alınmıştır. Modern siyaseti toplumsal alandan düşünmek, Durkheim’in sosyolojik düşüncesinin önemli bir başlangıç noktası ve içeriğidir. Dolayısıyla Durkheim’in erken dönem yazılarını yeniden gözden geçirmeye ve Durkheim’in siyasal alandan toplumsal alana nasıl geçiş yaptığının ve modern siyasetin toplumsal teorisini nasıl kurduğunun izini sürmeye çalışmak bu makalenin amaçları arasındadır. Bu makalenin temel tezi Durkheim’in iki tür sosyal dayanışmasının, kısmen on üçüncü yüzyıldan beri modern devleti kavramsallaştırmak için kullanılan universitas ve societas kavramsal geleneklerinin bir devamı olduğunu savunmaktadır. Durkheim bu kavramları işaret ettiği anlamlar açısından dönüştürürken, aynı zamanda siyasi toplumun evrimsel tarihi ve gerçekliğine dair bir doktrin de oluşturmuştur. Durkheim’in siyaset felsefesinin toplumsal alan boyutunda ortaya koyduğu orijinal devlet teorisine verdiği yanıt, doğal olarak sosyolojinin sözde öncülerinin tartışılmasını içerir. Gerçekten de Durkheim, Aristoteles, Montesquieu ve diğerlerini tartışırken ve modern doğal hukukçularının ve onların takipçilerinin toplumsal görüşlerini eleştirirken, devlet teorisini sosyolojik bir bakış açısıyla tartışmanın mümkün olduğunu ifade eder ve aynı zamanda Orta Çağ'ın sonlarından beri modern devleti kavramsallaştırmak için kullanılan iki büyük gelenek olan societas ve universitas'ı bilinçsizce ve eleştirel bir şekilde miras alır. Nihayetinde Durkheim’in meslek grupları teorisi ancak bu dönüşümsel doktrin bağlamında doğru bir şekilde anlaşılabilir.
