Qualitative Inquiry Under Disciplinary Control: An Archaeological Strategy for Interpreting Textual Interstices in Prison Fieldwork/ Disipliner Kontrol Altında Nitel Araştırma: Hapishanelerde Bir Saha Çalışması Stratejisi Olarak Metinsel Ara Alanların Bir Araya Getirilmesi
Abstract
Research in prisons and other disciplinary institutions poses a distinctive epistemological challenge: access to the research universe is mediated by institutional authorities who deliver social reality through fragmented, scripted encounters. This article examines how externally research positioning-through schedules, surveillance, and restricted access-shapes qualitative data production and conditions claims validity and generalization. Drawing on fieldwork conducted in an adult prison and a juvenile detention center in Mexico, the study analyzes interviews, field diaries, and bounded observations produced during controlled entries and exists. By textual interstices, we refer to fragmented narratives and contextual observations generated under conditions of disciplinary control, where everyday spontaneity is structurally inhibited. We propose an archaeological interpretive strategy that assembles textual interstices through an iterative combination of induction and deduction supported by sociological imagination. Findings suggest that disciplinary scripting suppresses unscripted behaviors, requiring a reconceptualization of validity: rather than relying on saturation, knowledge emerges from the coherent interpretation of institutionally produced fragments. The article contributes a transferable analytical framework for interpreting fragmented qualitative data in controlled environments.
