The research findings evaluated under the headings of personal characteristics, family, and the nature of social media. Results on personal characteristics are similar to the literature. At the same time, the data showed that social media experience shapes personality traits. Accordingly, there is a reciprocal relationship between these two factors. Introversion and shyness observed in the case diminished and disappeared with the use of social media. Family, another variable that differs according to various samples and study groups, offers an atmosphere in which personal characteristics of family members are shaped. It may encourages the educational use of social media with a safe and open approach to cybersecurity. In this study, it is seen that the family adopted a deeply supportive approach in the student's use of social media. The teacher, who is in close contact with the family, described them as student-oriented, investigative, and open to communication. Students who are not supported sufficiently by their family remain disadvantaged in the digital field. This situation can be considered as a digital gap. Another factor that shapes the educational use of social media is the nature of social media. In the research, it is argued that using social media takes a lot of time and requires a certain effort, being both conscious and skeptical about cybersecurity, and knowing how to make functional choices. It is possible to use Bourdieu's concepts of field-habitus-capital and symbolic violence to understand the nature of social media. The case (@ipekv1), who is considered a successful actor in the educational use of social media in this study, actually strengthens its field-specific capital in the digital field, based on field-specific rules.
The study argues that digital technologies are stepping into a social world where it is possible to be included and excluded beyond just clicking and writing. In this context, the digital gap is not just about access to technology, it is about the way we use technology and its consequences. “What we learn from the family is more of an instruction manual than an encouragement and support” Bourdieu said. The manual in question here is the cybersecurity knowledge that the student obtained from the family and the family's close relationship with the school. These gains contribute to the digital capital of the student. İpek, as a 13-year-old student, sometimes experiences symbolic violence even in the replies to the educational content she shared. The concept of symbolic violence refers to the techniques of domination in many areas of life. In a digital space such as social media, relations of power find expression through symbolic violence, not physical violence. It would not be wrong to say that social media is the field where symbolic violence is practiced most rapidly and effectively.
In line with the results, students who want to use social media for educational purposes may be advised to be aware that they may not be able to use social media effectively without understanding its nature. On the other hand, parents need to improve their knowledge, especially in cybersecurity, so that they can effectively guide their children. Instead of seeing the time spent on the internet as a waste of time, taking advantage of the facilities offered in an objective-oriented way may be recommended.
Sosyal medyayı eğitsel amaçlı kullanma dinamiklerinin anlaşılmasını amaçlayan bu çalışma bir örnek olay araştırmasıdır. Araştırmanın katılımcıları aktif bir sosyal medya kullanıcısı olan öğrenci, öğrencinin velisi ve öğretmenidir. Veriler görüşme, gözlem ve yazılı kaynaklar (tweetler) aracılığıyla toplanmıştır. Görüşme verileri üzerinde MAXQDA ile içerik analizi yapılmıştır. Tweet analizlerinde ise R ve Python programlama dillerinden faydalanılarak oluşturulan uygulamalar kullanılmıştır. Böylelikle @ipekv1 (öğrenci) kullanıcısının tweetleri veri kümesi haline getirilmiş ve analiz edilmiştir. Bu analizde etkileşim haritası, hashtag analizi ve en çok etkileşim alan tweetler incelenmiştir. Araştırma bulguları kişisel özellikler, aile ve sosyal medyanın doğası başlıkları altında değerlendirilmiştir. Araştırma sonuçları Bourdieucu yaklaşımla tartışılmıştır. Araştırmanın çıkarımları doğrultusunda sosyal medyayı eğitsel amaçlı kullanmak isteyen öğrencilere, sosyal medyanın doğasını anlamadan etkin bir kullanım gerçekleştiremeyeceklerinin farkında olmaları; velilere ise çocukların dijital uçurumdan korunmak için sadece internet erişimine değil aileden alacakları bir kullanma kılavuzuna ihtiyaç duyduklarını bu nedenle onlara siber güvenlik dahil sosyal medyanın içeriği hakkında destek olmaları önerilebilir.
