INVESTIGATION OF VELOCITY DISTRIBUTION AROUND BRIDGE ABUTMENT WITH COMPUTATIONAL FLUID DYANAMICS

Abstract

Bridge failures occur mostly due to local scour around bridge piers during floods. To better understand the scour and the resulting bridge failure mechanism, flow behavior should be accurately determined in the vicinity of piers. In recent years, mainly based on computational fluid dynamics, numerical modeling and evaluation of these data for the solution of similar problems, has become as an alternative tool. In this study, in order to investigate velocity distribution around rectangle shaped bridge abutment, three-dimensional numerical model was generated by using the FLOW 3D computer program. Modeling results were compared with experimental results in literature.

Abstract

Köprülerin yykylmasy ço?unlukla ta?kynlar syrasynda köprü ayaklary civarynda meydana gelen yerel oyulmalardan kaynaklanmaktadyr. Oyulma ve buna ba?ly olarak yykylma mekanizmasynyn daha iyi anla?ylabilmesi için köprü ayaklary civaryndaki akym davrany?ynyn do?ru olarak belirlenmesi gereklidir. Son yyllarda, hesaplamaly aky?kanlar dinami?i esaslaryna dayanan sayysal modeller benzer problemlerin çözümünde ve bu verilerin de?erlendirilmesinde alternatif araçlar olmaktadyrlar. Bu çaly?mada, dikdörtgen geometriye sahip köprü kenar aya?y civaryndaki hyz da?ylymyny incelemek için FLOW 3D bilgisayar programy vasytasyyla 3 boyutlu sayysal modelleme yapylmy?tyr. Modelleme sonucu bulunan sayysal sonuçlar daha önce yapylmy? deneysel sonuçlarla kar?yla?tyrylmy?tyr.
