A STUDY ON MOBILE PHONE USAGE OF UNIVERSITY STUDENTS

Abstract

In this study, the developments on mobile phone are summarized and examined the effects of some socio-economics variables on mobile phone usage of the university students. For this purpose, a survey was conducted on the students at Pamukkale University. The students mostly prefer to use prepaid plans. They have mobile phone expenditures of 30 TL as they have average income of 471 TL monthly. They talk on mobile phone and also send message much more than the mean of Turkey. They communicate with 4-5 persons by mobile phone for daily and renovate handsets about every two years. Model estimations show that as income, food expenditure, number of handset, usage experience and talking time increase, mobile phone expenditures increase. However, it decreases as housing expenditures increases. Income elasticity of mobile phone expenditure is 0.35 for the students. This result shows that mobile phone has become a compulsory good for the university students.

Abstract

Bu çaly?mada, mobil telefon piyasasyndaki geli?meler özetlenmekte ve anket yoluyla elde edilen veriler analiz edilerek bazy sosyo-ekonomik de?i?kenlerin üniversite ö?rencilerinin mobil telefon kullanymy üzerindeki etkileri incelenmektedir. Bu amaçla, Pamukkale Üniversitesi ö?rencilerine bir anket uygulanmy?tyr. Ö?renciler büyük ço?unlukla ön ödemeli tarifeler kullanmayy tercih etmektedirler. Aylyk ortalama gelirleri 471 TL iken, ayda ortalama 30 TL mobil telefon harcamasy yapmaktadyrlar. Türkiye ortalamasyndan hem çok daha fazla konu?makta ve hem de daha çok mesaj göndermektedirler. Günde ortalama yakla?yk 4-5 ki?i ile görü?mekte ve yakla?yk 2 yylda bir ahizeleri yenilemektedirler. Model tahminlerine göre gelir, yemek harcamasy, ahize sayysy, mobil telefon kullanma tecrübesi ve konu?ma süresi arttykça mobil telefon harcamalary artmaktadyr. Buna kar?yn, barynma harcamalary artarken mobil telefon harcamalary azalmaktadyr. Ö?renciler için mobil telefon harcamalarynyn gelir esnekli?i 0.35 bulunmu?tur. Bu sonuç, mobil telefonun üniversite ö?rencileri için zorunlu bir ürün haline geldi?ini göstermektedir.
