The evolution of the rebab, its position in organology, and its place in global cultural identity

Abstract

This study argues that the term rebab was not a fixed designation referring to a single instrument throughout history, but was used in different geographical regions and musical traditions with changing organological features, performance practices, and cultural meanings. The rebab should therefore be regarded not merely as the name of a particular instrument, but as a multilayered conceptual field that has encompassed different structures and functions over time. When historical records, dictionaries, musical manuscripts, organological descriptions, and regional examples related to the rebab are examined together, it becomes clear that the same term did not correspond to the same structural reality in every period and milieu. In some traditions, the rebab is associated with bowed string instruments, whereas in others it denotes plucked instruments played with a plectrum or the fingers. This diversity makes it difficult to define the rebab as a single, unchanging instrument type and shows that the concept acquired new meanings over time. Examples from the Ottoman sphere, the Arab world, Iran, Central Asia, North Africa, Southeast Asia, and Europe reveal that the rebab displayed variability not only in formal terms but also in functional and terminological respects. Moreover, the rebab cannot be regarded solely as a material and organological object; in certain cultural settings, it also carries aesthetic, symbolic, and spiritual meanings. Particularly in classical texts and within Mevlevî culture, the rebab emerges not simply as a sound-producing instrument, but as an important element in worlds of narrative, representation, and meaning. For this reason, classifications based only on formal characteristics are insufficient to explain the rebab. The historical use of the term, its cultural environment, and the layers of meaning it bears must be considered together. Rather than representing a fixed, singular organological identity, the rebab represents a multidimensional instrumental tradition that has differentiated over time and been redefined in diverse cultural contexts.

Rebabın evrimi, organoloji içindeki yeri ve dünya kültürlerindeki konumu

Abstract

Bu çalışma, rebab teriminin tarih boyunca tek bir çalgıyı gösteren sabit bir ad olmadığını, farklı coğrafyalarda ve müzik geleneklerinde değişen organolojik özellikler, icra biçimleri ve kültür çevrelerinde kazandığı anlamlarla varlık gösterdiğini ileri sürmektedir. Rebab, yalnızca belirli bir çalgının adı olarak değil, zaman içinde farklı yapılar ve görevler kazanmış çok katmanlı bir kavram alanı olarak değerlendirilmelidir. Rebaba ilişkin tarihî kayıtlar, sözlükler, müzik yazıları, organolojiye dair tanımlar ve çeşitli bölgelerdeki kullanım örnekleri birlikte incelendiğinde, aynı adın farklı dönem ve çevrelerde tek bir yapıya karşılık gelmediği anlaşılmaktadır. Rebab, bazı geleneklerde yayla çalınan telli çalgılarla ilişkilendirilirken bazı geleneklerde mızrapla veya parmakla çalınan çekmeli sazları göstermektedir. Bu çeşitlilik, rebabın tek ve değişmez bir çalgı tipi olarak tanımlanmasını güçleştirmekte, adın içinde geçtiği tarihî ve coğrafi çevreye göre yeni anlamlar kazandığını göstermektedir. Osmanlı sahası, Arap dünyası, İran, Orta Asya, Kuzey Afrika, Güneydoğu Asya ve Avrupa’daki örnekler, rebabın yalnız biçimi bakımından değil, gördüğü iş ve adlandırılması bakımından da değişken bir görünüm sergilediğini ortaya koymaktadır. Ayrıca rebab, yalnızca maddi ve organolojik bir nesne olarak değerlendirilemez. Bazı çevrelerde estetik, simge değeri taşıyan ve manevî anlamlar da taşır. Özellikle klasik metinlerde ve Mevlevî kültüründe rebab, yalnızca ses üreten bir araç değil, anlatı, temsil ve anlam dünyasında öne çıkan bir unsur olarak belirir. Bu sebeple rebabı açıklarken yalnız biçime dayalı sınıflandırmalar yeterli değildir. Terimin tarih boyunca kullanılışı, kültür çevresi ve taşıdığı anlamlar birlikte değerlendirilmelidir. Sonuç olarak rebab, sabit ve tekil bir organolojik kimlikten çok, zaman içinde değişen ve çeşitli kültür çevrelerinde yeniden tanımlanan çok yönlü bir çalgı geleneğini temsil etmektedir.
