Abstract
Kocaeli, which was known by various names in historical periods from ancient times till today, was recognized by the Ottoman State as the Izmit Sanjak (administrative region) in the 19th century. Music was regarded as an important part of cultural life in the residential areas of Armenians, who populated the city from early 16th century. Music was there in the life of the Armenians, sometimes in educational institutions, sometimes in religious rituals and sometimes at the social events that were part of daily life, like weddings, festivals or fairs. This study is significant in revealing the contributions of Armenians living in the Izmit Sanjak, to the cultural life of the region in terms of music.
