Cyberbullying Awareness Scale: A Validity and Realiablity Study
Abstract
Cyber bullying, which takes place by misusing information and communication technologies to harm individuals, has become one of the leading problems of our time. This scale development study was carried out in order to determine to what extent students are aware of cyber bulling events that take place at schools. The participants consisted of 300 students studying in a high school in Sakarya. 108 (36%) participants were female and 192 participants (64%) were male. During the scale development process, a survey on cyber bullying awareness was initially conducted and an item pool was created with the convenient items. After necessary adjustments were made according to expert opinions, factorial and construct validity and reliability analyses were conducted by implementing the scale on the target sample. The scale’s factorl validity was determined according to exploratory and confirmatory factor analyses, construct validity was determined according to convergent and discriminant validity, and reliability was determined according to Cronbach’s Alpha internal consistency and composite reliability coefficients. As a result, a valid and reliable cyber bullying awareness scale consisting of 26 items and 3 factors was developed.
