SUMMARY
Metabisulfite Sensitivity in Adults With Bronchial Asthma and Allergic Rhinitis
Reported prevalence of sulfite sensitivity in adults asthmatics is 5-10 %. In order to study the prevalence in our country, we have performed double blind placebo controlled gfaded oral challenges with metabisulfite (MBS) in limonade in 58 adults including 36 asthmatics, 14 cases with allergic rhinitis and 8 controls. A positive test was considered to 20 % or more decrease from baseline of forced expiratory volume in 1 second (FEVi). Nineteen asthmatics (52,8 %) reacted to MBS and one of these reactors gave positive response to rechallenge with MBS capcule. There were no positive reactor among controls and cases with allergic rhinitis.
