Abstract

SUMMARY

THE EFFECTS OF DIETHYLSTILBESTROL ON EPIPHYSEAL PLATES IN
THE RATS
In order to investigate the effects of prenatal diethylstilbestrol (DES) administration on epiphyseal plates, 5 U g/day DES injected subcutaneously to 8 female and 8 male rats for 5 days beginning the day of birth. The other 8 female and 8 male rats were followed to be control group. At the and of the 3 th month, the widenings of the lower femoral and upper tibial epiphyseal plates were measured and histological changes were evaluated.
In histologic examinations, the cartilage proliferation in epiphyseal plates were found to be decreased and the cartilage maturation and calcification were found to be increased in DES injected group. There were significant narrowing, in the measurements of the epiphyseal plate widenings, in the DES injected rats (p <0.05, p< 0.001),,
The results of this study revealed that the prenatal DES administration can be cause longitudinal bone growth inhibition by early epiphyseal plate closing.



ÖZET

Prenatal diethylstilbestrol (DES) kullanımının, epifiz plak¬ları üzerine etkilerini araştırmak amacı ile; 8 dişi, 8 erkek sıçana doğduğu günden başlıyarak 5 gün, günde 5 mikrogram DES cilt altına injekte edildi. Diğer 8 dişi ve 8 erkek sıçan kontrol grubu olarak takip edildi. 3.ay so¬nunda, femur alt uç ve tibia üst uç epifiz plaklarının ge¬nişlikleri ölçüldü ve histolojik değişiklikler değerlendi¬rildi.
Histolojik incelemelerde; DES injeksiyonu yapılan grupta, epifiz plaklarında kıkırdak proliferasyonu azalmış, kıkırdak matürasyonu ve kalsifikasyonu artmış olarak bulundu. DES verilen sıçanlarda, epifiz plağı genişlikleri ölçümlerinde belirgin daralma vardı (p < 0.05, p< 0.001).
Bu çalışma sonuçları, prenatal DES kullanımının, epifiz plaklarının erken kapanmasına neden olarak uzunluğuna büyü¬mesini inhibe edebileceğini gösterdi.
