Pericardial involvement in staphylococcal pneumonia
✓Pericardial changes was observed with telecardiography, electrocardiography and echocardiography in 24 patients with staphylococcal pneumonia. Low-voltage QRS conmlexes, elevation of ST segment in electrocardiography and cardiomegaly were seen in four patients. In echocardiographic study, pericardial effusion as observed for 15 (62.5%) patients. We observed that pericardial effusion was generally (13/15) benign and spontaneously disappeared with curing primary disease. Cardiac tamponade was developed in two of our patients who also had elektrocardiographic changes and cardiomegaly.
It is considered as an important finding that, during the course of staphylococcal pneumonia, 62.5% of cases had pericardial effusion and 8.3% had cardiac tamponade.
