ASSOCIATION BETWEEN AGILITY AND JUMPING PERFORMANCE IN TEAM AND COURT TENNIS

Abstract

The aim of this study was to investigate the association between agility and jumping performance in team and court tennis. Fifty four university students in the different sports branches (20 futsal, 12 volleyball, 12 handball, 10 tennis courts) participated in the study. The athletes’ ages, heights and weights were measured for descriptive statistics. Zig-Zag and T tests were used to determine agility performance, while squat (SS) and counter movement (CMJ) and horizontal jump (HJ) tests were carried out to determine jumping performance. In addition to averages and standard deviations of the data, Pearson correlation analysis was used to determine the relationship between agility and jumping performance. At the end of the study, it was found that there was high negative correlation between only horizontal jump and respectively, zig- zag and T test (r = -0.869, -0.855 p <0.01) in court tennis players; there was high negative correlation between both T test and respectively   active, squat and vertical jump ( r = -0.695, -0.789 and -0.805 p <0.01), and between zig-zag test and respectively active, squat and vertical jump (r = -0.759, -0.879 and -0.808 p <0.01) in volleyball players, there was high negative correlation between  both T test and respectively active, squat and vertical jump (r= -0,615, -0.623 and -0.760 p<0,01), and between  zig-zag test and respectively active, squat and vertical jump (-0.551, -0.443 and -0.613 p<0.01) in futsal players; no significant relationship was found as a result of agility and jumping tests in handball players. It was determined that the relationship between agility and jump performance varies according to the sports branches. It is recommended that plyometric trainings should be regulated according to sports branches.
