Abstract

Management of Recreational Programs in Tourism Enterprises in Turkey Within the Scope of Water Sports

Year 2025, Volume: 16 Issue: 2, 269 - 304, 20.08.2025

Abstract

The aim of this study was to determine the opinions of managers of five-star tourism establishments operating in the Aegean Region of Turkey regarding recreational water sports. A qualitative research design was chosen as the method. Participants were selected using a criterion sampling method, including five five-star hotels and hotel managers in the Aegean Region, both of which offer and do not offer water sports services. Data were collected using a semi-structured, open-ended interview design. The data was coded and themes were identified through descriptive and content analysis. The study findings indicated that participants viewed recreational water sports as essential for hotel establishments. They also noted that geographical conditions play a critical role in the provision of recreational water sports. However, in recent years, changing customer profiles and evolving customer expectations have reduced the demand for water sports. Furthermore, it was revealed that hotel managers generally associate the concept of recreation with activities such as entertainment, rest, and socialization. According to participants, the main shortcomings regarding recreational water sports were identified as lack of quality service, lack of coordination, inadequate promotions, and insufficient staff. Participants categorized the main risks associated with recreational water sports as accident risk, death risk, environmental risks, and safety risks. They also stated that recreational water sports play a significant role in hotel selection. Finally, hotel managers, in their opinions regarding the factors customers consider when choosing recreational water sports, generally indicated that geographical location, low-risk, popular, and easily accessible sports are influential.
