Abstract

Common premalignant lesions of the oral mucosa

Year 2018, Volume: 10 Issue: 2, 190 - 200, 01.06.2018

Abstract

The
World Health Organization (WHO) has accepted the classification of precancers
into precancerous (premalign) lesions and precancerous (premalign) conditions.
There is general agreement that a premalign lesion is defined as “a
morphologically altered tissue in which cancer is more likely to occur than its
apparently normal counterpart. Examples for premalign lesions are
leukoplakia, erythroplakia, palatal lesions associated with reverse smoking and actinic cheiloses. Examples for premalign conditions include oral submucous fibrosis, lichen planus, discoid lupus erythematosus, sideropenic dysphagia, epidermolysis bullosa and xeroderma pigmentosa.

In
this rewiev, we aimed to give information about leukoplakia and erythroplakia
which are the most common premalign lesions and lichen planus that is one of
the premalign conditions.
