The Role of Manual Body Acupressure in Symptom Management in Adults

Abstract

Manual body acupressure is a non-pharmacological, practical, and low-cost complementary approach that can be used to manage symptoms such as pain, sleep disturbances, and fatigue. This letter to the editor discusses the findings of randomized controlled trials comparing manual body acupressure to standard care or sham acupressure in adult individuals between 2015 and 2025. The findings suggest that acupressure can have positive effects, particularly on pain and sleep quality. However, there is significant heterogeneity among the studies in terms of acupressure points applied, duration of application, and protocols. Therefore, more robust randomized controlled trials with standardized protocols are needed to more clearly define the place of acupressure in clinical practice.
