Is the CONUT score a prognostic index in multiple myeloma?

Abstract

patients with multiple myeloma (MM). Materials and methods: Our study was designed retrospectively. We calculated the CONUT score based on serum albumin, total cholesterol and lymphocytes. The study included 213 patients; 99 (46.5%) were female and 114 (53.5%) were male. The median follow-up period was 38 months (1-161). Results: The median age was 64 years. We participated the patients into four groups. It was defined as CONUT scores: normal (0-1), low (2-4), moderate (5-8), and high (9-12). We found significant differences between overall survival (OS) and progression-free survival (PFS) with regard to CONUT score, respectively, as high (OS:12, PFS:1 months), moderate (OS:27, PFS:13 months) and low (OS:54, PFS:28 months) (p<0.001 and p=0.001). In the multivariate analysis for OS, having moderate CONUT score (HR: 2.21, p=0.005) and high CONUT score (HR: 2.38, p=0.033) were increased the risk of mortality. In the multivariate analysis for PFS, compared to a normal CONUT score, a moderate CONUT score (HR: 1.85, p=0.007), and a high CONUT score (HR: 2.01, p=0.043) were found to increase the risk of progression. Conclusion: We found that a high CONUT score is related to decreased OS and PFS. In our study, we showed that the CONUT score is an independent, useful and strong prognostic index in MM.
