Evaluation of geriatric infections in 50 cases

Abstract

The aim of this study was to evaluate the infections and responsible pathogens in the patients in thegeriatric age group. Data of the patients, aged 60 and older and hospitalized in the Clinics ofInfectious Diseases, Pamukkale University was evaluated retrospectively. Infections as a cause ofhospitalization were identified as the following; urinary tract infection (17; 34%), acute gastroenteritis(9; 18%), low respiratory tract infection (4; 8%), fever of unknown origin (4; 8%), cellulitis (4; 8%) andother infections (12; 24%). E. coli, K. pneumonia and C. albicans were the most frequently isolatedpathogens from urinary tract infections. When the hepatic serology of the patients was interpreted, twopatients were determined as inactive hepatitis B carriers and nine patients had immmunity throughhepatitis B infection. Anti-HAV IgG was positive for 66% and anti-HCV was positive for 8% patients. Inthis study, urinary tract infection and acute gastroenteritides diseases were the most frequently seengroups of infectious diseases in the elderly people. There is a need of evaluation of the infections andcausative agents seen in the geriatric age group through more extensive studies.
