Investigation of Cryptococcus neoformans in excreta samples of urban pigeons (Columba livia) lived in Denizli city center

Abstract

OBJECTIVE: Environmental colonizing Cryptococcus neoformans is an encapsulated yeast causing life-threating disease in especially immunsupressive hosts. It may frequently be present in urban pigeons (Columba livia) excreta or avian guano contaminated soil. There are numerous pigeon shelters and dovecotes in Denizli city center. The purpose of this study was to determine the presence of C.neoformans in public areas including dovecotes.METHODS: Pigeon excreta contaminated soil specimens were obtained from 60 sampling pointsof different 10 locations in city center of Denizli. All samples were cultured onto Staib agar supplemented with biphenyl and chloramphenicol. Isolated colonies have been conventionally identifi ed.RESULTS: C.neoformans has been isolated from out 3 (5.0%) of 60 samples.CONCLUSION: Our fi ndings suggest that Denizli city region’s dovecotes are suitable for presence of environmental C.neoformans.
