Hypopharynx trauma after swallowing broken pieces of glass

Abstract

Hypopharyngeal injury due to trauma is extremely rare. Hypopharyngeal trauma is divided in two groups; blunt and penetrating trauma. Patients usually present to the hospital with swallowing disorders, pain and dysphonia. Clinical findings on physical examination are mucosal edema, discoloration, hemorrhagic areas, hematoma, stridor and subcutaneous emphysema. The airway should be secured in patients with hypopharyngeal trauma and surgical interventions should be performed if necessary. In this article; we present a 56 year old schizophrenic female patient who presented to our clinic with dysphagia , the patient had tried to commit suicide the previous week and was suspected of having a hypopharyngeal tumor.
