Abstract

Abstract

Purpose: The main of this study is to determine the obesity prevalance and the influencing factors in the primary and middle school students at the age of 6-14 in Denizli Serinhisar district.

Material and Methods: The universe of this cross-sectional study consists of students from 6-14 years of age who are studying at all public schools in the Denizli province of Serinhisar. The sample is not selected and it is aimed to reach to cover the whole of the universe. A questionnaire consisting of 26 questions was prepared for the parents of the children. The body weights determined by the investigator's measurements were calculated by dividing the height lengths by the height. The obtained body mass indexes were evaluated. Those with body mass index below the 5.percentile were considered under weight, those with between ≥85.- <95.persentile, overweight and those with ≥95. percentile, obese.

Results: 4.0% of the students were found to be underweight, 16.0% overweight and 12.0% obese. Overweight/obesity in boys (17.7% and 15.2%) comparing with girls (13.3% and 9.2%) (p=0.004); overweight/obesity in children with overweight/obese mother (17.6% and 16.7%) comparing with normal weight mother (12.2% and 6.8%) (p<0.001);  overweight/obesity in children with overweight/obese father (17.2% and 15.5%) comparing with normal weight father (9.8% and 4.8%)(p<0.001); overweight/obesity in children with high birth weight (22.0% and 15.9%) comparing with normal birth weight (13.6% and 11.3%) (p<0.001) were found to be statistically different.

Conclusions: In this study, one out of every three children is overweight or obese. Overweight/obesity are higher in boys, in mothers or fathers overweight/obese and in those with high birth weight.
