Eine neue Weihinschrift für Meter aus Dorylaion

Abstract

In 2009, in the province of Eskişehir in the south of the ancient city at roadworks a limestone stele broken into two parts was found. The dedicatory inscription from Dorylaion is a new example of the deep-rooted Meter worship in Phrygia. In the inscription, the goddess is not named as Meter Theon and there is no indication of the characteristic of Meter. Our inscription is an additional example of Phrygia in which Meter exists as an independent deity. The monument was not erected as a votive (εὐχή) offering, but according consecrated to divine command, as in some other documents from Phrygia. Such inscriptions show a directly personal contact between the believers and Meter and have the direct call function of this goddess. The stele was erected on the initiative of a priest. This priest, who has set up this dedication with his family members, contributes Staberianus a rare and old Latin cognomen. In contrast, his father bears the well known Greek name Doryphoros. The particular interest of this inscription is that a hitherto apparently still not occupied epithet (= Sum (.)ene) is called. Where this place Som-- was located, cannot be said with certainty, but it will be presumed to near Dorylaion.
