Şanlıurfa Müzesi’ndeki Roma Dönemi Mezar Stelleri ve Bizans Dönemi Yazıtları

Year 2018, Volume: 4, 74 - 95, 11.12.2018

Abstract

Roman Funerary Steles and Byzantine Inscriptions in the Museum of Şanlıurfa

Year 2018, Volume: 4, 74 - 95, 11.12.2018

Abstract

This article presents 22 stone objects from the Museum of Şanlıurfa
(ancient Edessa) in southeastern Turkey. There are three groups of objects: a dedication
from Edessa, funerary steles from Zeugma, and Byzantine inscriptions from
Şanlıurfa. The stele from Edessa was known in previous publications; this
article offers a new epigraphic commentary on its inscription (no. 1). Most of
the funerary steles from Zeugma in Şanlıurfa have been known since the
publication of J. Wagner in 1976; here they will be re-treated both
epigraphically and iconographically. Three steles from Zeugma were not
previously published (nos. 7, 9 and 10). The last four objects are from the
province of Şanlıurfa (ancient Osrhoene) and they belong to the Byzantine
period, the epigraphy of which is not known in detail for this region.
