Digitalization of Safety Management System within the Framework of Aviation 4.0

Abstract

The rapid development of technology in the world has brought with it the understanding of Industry 4.0, and the effect of Industry 4.0 in all sectors is seen especially in management systems. In Industry 4.0, where technology has become an indispensable element in the way of doing business, concepts such as automation, digitalization, data exchange and IoT come to the fore. In the aviation sector, which is one of the intensive information and technology-based sectors, Industry 4.0 is examined as Aviation 4.0 and integrated into the academic literature. Safety Management Systems, which have been brought to the sector by the International Civil Aviation Organization in parallel with the development of Industry 4.0, aims at a transformation related to the understanding of safety in aviation, where the concept of safety should be kept at very high levels. In particular, the change needs to be shaped within the framework of the concept of safety culture. In order to develop a safety culture through SMS, the processes of determining, measuring, evaluating, analyzing and storing safety data gain importance. In this direction, the effect of Industry 4.0, which has been adapted to the aviation industry as Aviation 4.0, on Safety Management System applications is examined in the world and within the scope of all stakeholders. In the aviation sector, with the rapid digitalization of the sector, it is seen that the SMS is also digitized. Accordingly, if academic studies fail to explain the impact of Aviation 4.0 on SMS, it will be even more difficult for the industry to adapt. In this context, in the study, "Is the academic literature sufficient to explain the connection between literature review and SMS digitalization?" search for an answer to the question.
