The Role of Unmanned Aerial Vehicles in Logistics: Expectations and Challenges in Package Delivery
Abstract
Unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) technology is gaining increasing importance in logistics and package delivery processes. The aim of this study is to examine current applications, expectations, and challenges related to the use of UAVs in package delivery. The research evaluated field applications, market shares, and future expectations in package delivery, as well as the challenges encountered (privacy, security, safety, and environmental impacts) through a systematic literature review; the collected data were classified within the framework of thematic content analysis to provide a comprehensive assessment. The findings reveal the contributions of UAV technology to package delivery, its operational limitations, and current developments in the sector. As a result, it has been determined that the integration of UAV technology into package delivery offers significant opportunities, including rapid delivery, operational cost advantages, and access to hard-to-reach areas. Nevertheless, it has been concluded that full potential cannot be achieved without considering factors such as privacy, security, safety, infrastructure requirements, and regulatory constraints. The study aims to provide stakeholders with guidance for strategic planning, policy development, and technology integration processes, as well as to offer comprehensive insights into the future use of UAVs in package delivery.
