Seasonal Personnel Selection of Ground Handling Companies in the Airline Industry: A Proposed Integrated BWM-ARAS MCDM Model
Abstract
The direct impact of human factors on aviation safety in the airline industry makes personnel selection decision critical for stakeholders involved in these processes. The aim of this study is to propose a multi-criteria decision-making model for seasonal personnel selection of ground handling organizations, which play a crucial role in operational processes in the airline industry, particularly at airports with high flight intensities during certain seasons. Within the scope of this study, the BWM-ARAS multi-criteria decisionmaking model is proposed. The model consists of 9 criteria from 2 different aspects that influence personnel selection decisions of ground handling organizations, based on the literature and expert opinions. The criteria were weighted using the Best Worst Method (BWM), while the ARAS method was employed to evaluate three students as alternative candidates by decision-makers in an aviation management department at a university. The model was applied, and the candidates were ranked accordingly. The study concluded that communication skills were identified as the most important criterion, while flexibility was found to be the worst criterion. Among the evaluated candidates, the first candidate was determined to be the most suitable candidate for seasonal employment in ground handling organizations. It is expected that the proposed model and the study results will provide guidance to human resources managers in ground handling organizations, which play a significant role in operational processes in aviation in terms of workload, regarding seasonal human resource selection.
