The Effect of Economic Crises on Economic Sustainability in the Mediterranean Countries: A Case Study on Aviation

Abstract

Aviation is one of the transportation sectors that affect the country's economy and ensure its development. The aim of this study; one of the most important problems of today is to examine the effects of the economic dimension of sustainability within the scope of the aviation sector. The importance of the research is to raise awareness of the airline companies operating in the sector and to make a quantitative contribution to the aviation case studies in the literature. The effects of the economic crises on the sustainable economy were examined within the scope of the aviation sector. In this analysis, the data of the Mediterranean countries Italy, France, Spain and Turkey for the years 2000-2019 were used. Among the variables included in the analysis, the dependent variable is gross national product; carbon dioxide emissions, the number of passengers carried in the aviation sector and the amount of cargo carried were chosen as independent variables. GMM and Granger Causality Analysis were applied to the variables, respectively. According to the GMM analysis, carbon dioxide emissions and the amount of cargo carried in the aviation sector are positive and statistically significant. The number of passengers carried in the aviation sector is negative and statistically insignificant. In the Granger Causality Analysis, it was found that there is a one-way causality relationship from economic growth to the amount of cargo transported. It was observed that there is a bidirectional causality relationship between economic growth, the number of passengers carried in aviation and carbon dioxide emissions.
