Voice of child passenger: Word association test approach to child-friendly airport

Abstract

This study was conducted to reveal the perceptions of students from 13-18 age groups about the concept of 'child-friendly airport'. A total of 371 students studying in Istanbul in the 2022-2023 academic year participated in the study. A phenomenological design was used in the study and the data were analyzed using the content analysis technique for the words coded for each theme. The NVIVO 11 program was used for word frequency analysis and word clouds were created. In the study, a word association test was applied with the "child-friendly airport" given to the students as a stimulus concept. The following questions were sought to be answered in the research: 1) Which words do students between the ages of 13-18 use to evoke the concept of "child-friendly airport"? 2) Considering their common characteristics, under which themes can the words related to the concept of "child-friendly airport" be grouped? In this study, the words used by the students were analyzed under four themes: Sociability, access/linkages, comfort/image, uses/activities. participants derived most words for the comfort/image theme and the least for the access/linkages theme. Among the most recurring words, "free service" "hygiene" "playground" and "colorful" are noteworthy. Given the lack of research on the child-friendly airport, it is believed that exploring it in terms of cognitive structure and conceptual meaning will make a significant contribution to the relevant literature, both in terms of content and the data collection technique used. Our findings and can help to develop child- and family-friendly airport concepts for travel practices.
